Camping Holidays Can Be Romantic

On a recent quiet afternoon in the office, my colleagues and I got talking about our most romantic holiday experiences. While most reminisced about luxurious hotel breaks and exotic cruises, my own choice for romance has to be a camping holiday. Now, I know most people probably wouldn’t consider putting the words camping and romance together in a sentence, and up until recently, I felt the same. However, a surprise holiday planned by my other half proved that camping holidays are not just family holidays but can be romantic too.

As my 30th birthday was on the horizon, my husband wanted to arrange for a special treat for me, so I had no idea where we were going until we arrived at the airport. As we queued at the check-in desk, I was excited to discover that my man had decided to make my holiday dream come true and take me to the beautiful region of Tuscany in Italy.

Arriving at our accommodation, it was time for the biggest surprise of all about the holiday – instead of staying in a hotel or bed and breakfast as we usually do when travelling in Europe, my husband had booked us into a camp-site. I have to admit, as we drove through the gates of the resort, a chill of horror ran down my spine as I envisaged a week of sleeping in a cold and uncomfortable tent.

Fortunately, after five years of marriage, my husband is well aware of my love of the comforts of home, so instead of packing our leaky old tent, he’d arranged for us to stay in a charming cabin for our holiday. Settling into the cabin was a real pleasure, as we found all “mod-cons” to hand. It was wonderful to jump under the shower to freshen up after our early morning flight, and as my husband had thought ahead, we had everything we needed to make coffee and a snack in the well equipped kitchen.

We quickly found that camping in our cabin was just as romantic as staying in a 5-star hotel can be. During the daytime we took lots of relaxed strolls around the local countryside, shopped on markets in the nearby villages and visited a few of the tourist attractions in the area . In the evenings, we sat and watched the sunset, cooked meals together and watched the stars come out. While this might not sound like the typical red roses and chocolates romance, the stress and distraction free environment meant that we were able to really give each other our full attention and enjoy sharing the simple pleasures of being on holiday. For me, that is what true romance is all about!

I would thoroughly recommend that anyone looking for ideas for a romantic holiday consider a camping trip. Although this might not be the first option that comes to mind, selecting a camp-site with quality facilities and accommodation can make this an ideal choice for couples looking to reignite those flames of love.
